Meet Marie
Marie Elizabeth Mato was born and raised in Miami, the daughter of hardworking Cuban immigrants who arrived in the U.S. in the early 1960s fleeing Castro’s communist regime. Marie graduated class valedictorian from St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School (1987) and class salutatorian from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy (1991). Marie is a proud double Cane. In 1994, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Miami School of Communication with a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science.
Following college graduation, Marie began working as a victim/witness counselor at the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office. As a counselor, she helped victims and witnesses of crimes by assisting them in all stages of court proceedings. While working at the office, she entered the night program at the University of Miami School of Law. She kept a full class schedule while working full-time at the State Attorney’s Office. While in law school, she was on law review and a member of Phi Delta Phi. In 1999, she graduated cum laude from The University of Miami School of Law. She has been a member of the Florida Bar in good standing since 1999.
Outside the office, Marie has been active in various voluntary bar organizations, including the League of Prosecutors, the Cuban American Bar Association, the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, the Catholic Lawyers Guild, and was recently appointed as a liaison to the Eleventh Judicial Circuit to The Florida Bar Board of Governors. Marie has also chaired a grievance committee for The Florida Bar, served as a member of the City of Miami Charter Review and Reform Committee, coached high school students on the mock trial team at her alma mater, and participated in Justice Teaching and Career Days at local schools.
Marie’s professionalism and trial skills have been recognized by various organizations with the following honors: Prosecutor of the Year Award by the League of Prosecutors (2014), State Prosecutor of the Year by the Dade Chiefs of Police L.E.O Award (2016), Outstanding Member Award by the Cuban American Bar Association (2011); and Prosecution Award of Honor by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) (2013, 2016).
